Celebrating our founders Bill and Wendy Harpe – 29/10/23

The Black-E Arts Centre recently hosted its much-anticipated People’s Gala – a night that radiated elegance, gratitude, and the vibrant spirit of community.

Wendy Harpe, Bill, Sally Morris and a host of other patron who have contributed to the growth and success of the Black-E. It was indeed a showcase of art, dance, and community unity – a reflection of The Black-E’s unwavering dedication to fostering inclusivity and creativity.

As the curtains rose, the stage burst into life, with our artistic director and host, Dr. Rebecca Amissah, setting the tone with a captivating opening. Margaret Fergusson followed with stunning opera renditions, reprising songs from the Black-E’s people’s opera and dance. Liverpool’s Griot-Levi Tafari, a recent recipient of the Citizen of Honour award, graced us with powerful words from the pages of Okyeame. Company of Friends left the audience in awe with their creative expression, presenting their highly acclaimed work, ‘What Ho! Uncle Vanya’. And then came the showstopper “GROUNDATION Dance” by IRIE! dance theatre, a celebration of 38 years of creativity that whisked the audience through the rich tapestry of African and Caribbean culture, creating a dance party atmosphere.

Guess who hit the dance floor? The legendary Bill Harpe! Yep, he joined the party with IRIE! creating a moment that will linger in our heart and memories.

MCs Jermaine Foster of BBC Radio and Dr. Rebecca Amissah Our hosts, did such an incredible job of making us feel like one big family. Dr. Suandi OBE paid touching tributes, expressing gratitude to sally Morris for his invaluable contributions.

But that’s not all! We spilled the beans on something big – free workshops and a play scheme with IRIE! dance theatre! It’s our way of saying, “Let’s keep the fun going!”

Cheers to Success: And guess what? The play scheme and adult workshops were a smash hit! Kids had a blast with creative activities and Nutritional meals. Adults rocked the dance floor with African and Caribbean vibes. It’s proof that when we come together, amazing things happen!
